Culture at Niederrhein

Art and cultural landscape - EinzigARTig

Whether regional history or contemporary art, the range of interesting museums is huge. The world’s largest street painting competition takes place in the Lower Rhine region, and jazz fans can choose from several renowned jazz festivals, such as those in Moers and Viersen. Here the “Muziek Biennale” takes place as a Rhenish cultural summer as well as comedy and art festivals, art exhibitions, classical music concerts, theater performances – also under the open sky – and much more.

MAGIC PLACES

The tomb of the ancient martyr Viktor is located in the crypt of Xanten Cathedral. A magical place, like so many other ecclesiastical sites in the Niederrhein region. Richly decorated, quite unlike the cathedral in Wesel, whose opulent furnishings were already lost during the Reformation. The spiritual and cultural center of “Kloster Kamp” breathes spirituality, and at the same time rich splendor can be admired in the treasury. Places to pause. Simply magical.

CONTEMPORARY ART

Otto Pankok, Joseph Beuys, Wilhelm Lehmbruck or Ewald Mataré: the Niederrhein has great artists to offer. Contemporary art is on display at the “Kurhaus Kleve” and “Schloss Moyland” museums, the “Städtische Galerie im Park” in Viersen has an excellent collection of prints (Rembrandt, Picasso, Dürer) and is the focal point of the sculpture park with works by Tony Cragg, Henry Moore and Mark Di Suvero.

In the Rhine Museum in Emmerich, for example, you can experience the great river, and in the Dike Village Museum in Bislich, you can learn about people’s fear of its great floods: Culture and history at your fingertips.

HIDDEN TREASURES

Did you know that there is a miner’s house in Kamp-Lintfort, where the adventurous history of underground coal mining is vividly presented? Or that Schermbeck has the world’s smallest electricity museum? Or that in Weeze there is the only museum in Germany dedicated to the history of the Royal Air Force? The Niederrhein is rich in such hidden museum treasures that are waiting to be discovered.
