Niers Cycling Trail– Cycling with the wind at all times
3 day cross-border round trip
Anyone who experiences the landscape between Rhein and Maas by bicycle is astonished at the richness of the scenery. Across this flat landscape, individual houses are distributed as though dabbed on with a brush. Their roofs, which almost reach down to the flower and vegetable beds, are a vivid red against the saturated, blue sky, where the wind drives large banks of cloud before it. Slender poplars bend from side to side and your eye wanders to the far distance across green meadows.
You follow the course of the Niers, which is protected from the wind. Old water mills with their creaking beams, picturesque moated castles in idyllic parks and honourable abbeys with romantic monastery gardens line the route.
Cycling through the town centre of Kevelaer is also recommended, allowing the unique, reflective atmosphere of the world-famous Marian pilgrimage site work its magic on you.
On the way back in the direction of Arcen you cycle along the Maas and reach Nationalpark De Maasduinen. The Maas dunes region is a very varied landscape consisting of high river dunes, expansive heathland, mixed forests and numerous moorlands on the east bank of the Maas. A wonderful area that exudes a deep sense of peace. Say goodbye to the Netherlands at the marketplace in Arcen with a “kopje koffie”, before you ride back to the hotel you started out from in Straelen.
