From the “Bauhaus” to the art treasures at the Silver Lake

three day radial bike tour around Krefeld

Viersen

As one of Germany’s greenest cities, Krefeld offers a great backdrop for enjoying leisure time in a variety of ways. But the city not only scores with nature, but also with a wealth of architecture and culture. Cycle past industrial buildings, villas and monuments on a tour of discovery through the silk-weaving city.

Follow in the footsteps of important architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and artists like Joseph Beuys. Other renowned architects such as Pfau, Behnisch and Buschhüter have left their mark on the cityscape with their buildings. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe built two villas for the silk manufacturers Lange and Esters, which are now international art museums. His only industrial building also stands in Krefeld and carries architectural history into the present and future as today’s “Mies van der Rohe Business Park”.

Pick up another trail the next day and go on a treasure hunt at the Lower Rhine Silver Lake. Familiarise yourself with a place where past and future meet. The SEEWERK on Silberseeweg in Moers sees itself as a forum for contemporary art. The extensive grounds of the former Dujardin distillery are home to an impressive sculpture park, studios and exhibition spaces. This is where the Beuys master student Anatol Herzfeld, who died in 2019, lived and worked in the last years of his life. Visit the small Anatol Museum and marvel at representative works by the artist.

From Krefeld, your cycle tour on the last day takes you through the typical Lower Rhine landscape to Villa V in Viersen, which thematically follows the Bauhaus architecture in Krefeld. It was built in 1931/32 by Bernhard Pfau and is one of the first buildings of the “Neues Bauen” movement. Today it is used as a residential building as well as a cultural centre with regular exhibitions and events on the Bauhaus theme. In addition to the Viersen Sculpture Collection, one of the most important contemporary sculpture parks in Germany, you can also discover some of Anatol’s works before cycling back to Krefeld.

Embark on this architectural journey through styles, eras and eras and discover the diversity of the Lower Rhine.
